Nairobi - Local quail farmers have established a website to enhance the growth of the sector.
Through the online site called Quail Farmers Kenya, members are able to share experiences and search for new markets for their birds and eggs.
The website creates a forum where upstarts in the business access information online especially on matters regarding licensing and the regulation of the industry.
Experienced farmers coach the newcomers on procedural matters such as obtaining licences from the Kenya Wildlife Service license before engaging in the trade. Inquiries concerning the enterprise are raised on the site and experienced farmers provide the necessary feedback.
Quail farmers argued that without the internet, it would be difficult to conduct business.
Margaret Mugera, a new quail farmer is among upstarts that are hopeful of growing their businesses thanks to the new website.
“Hi pals. Just incubated eggs this morning, several questions on this. Temperature 37.5, humidity 50. Is it OK? Where is the water placed? Side or center? I touched the water and it was kind of lukewarm and it was not reducing. I added but not because it was less. How fast does it go down?” she enquired on the Quail Farmers Kenya wall.
Quail farming is a fast growing enterprise in Kenya.
Coincidentally, online training, farming and marketing has taken root in the country.
The online trend has been largely attributed to the fact that majority of youth in Kenya have access to smartphones or internet-enabled phones that retail to as low as Sh.2000 ($23).
