New union demands May Day organisation

Nairobi - The Federation of Public Servants Trade Unions (PUSETU) has demanded to take charge of coordination of this year’s Labor Day celebrations.
PUSETU, which is an umbrella body of trade unions within the public sector, is set to be launched next week in a move seen to be positioning itself to play a major role in the coordination of Labour Day celebrations, celebrated internationally on May 1.
The union has already written to the Ministry of Labor regarding the coordination of Labor Day celebrations.
“We wrote to the ministry, who then communicated to others about our demands,” said the union.
The newly-formed federation, whose Secretary is also the Secretary General of the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) ,lamented the manner in which Labor Day had been conducted and coordinated in the past.
The union said that the day had in the past been commemorated as if it belonged to “particular persons.”
It insisted that Labor Day belonged to all workers and not to a few unionists.
“We are not praying for anyone to grant us an opportunity to coordinate the marking of Labor Day. We are demanding since it is our right,” the union ordered.
