Nairobi based tech mogul shot dead by armed robbers

05 June 2014, 16:58

Nairobi - Nairobi based media mogul Carey Eaton has died after an armed robbery in Nairobi, Thursday morning.

Eaton was the co-founder of the One Africa Media group of companies which includes well known brands such as Cheki.co.ke, BrighterMonday, BuyRentKenya and StayNow in Kenya, as well as similar internet based businesses across Africa.

He was killed after an apparent robbery attempt in Nairobi's posh Loresho suburb after he resisted attempts by thugs to enter the building in which he and his friends were having a party.

Eaton was shot in the head and pronounced dead on arrival in hospital.

" We received reports of an armed robbery and have confirmed that one male person was killed in the incident, Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue told News24.

It is understood that the thugs managed to escape with an assortment of valuables from the shocked guests.

Kibue also confirmed that the thugs escaped and that a man-hunt was on for the suspects.

" There is an ongoing man hunt and we are following some leads on the matter, he added.

Eaton is of Australian origin but has lived in Kenya for close to all his life. He leaves behind his wife Steph, and children Noah, ILola, Ted and Archie.

News of his death was received with shock by many who knew him, including employees at Cheki.co.ke.

" He was a good man. It is sad that we have lost a pioneer in Kenyan tech like this, Maina Mwangi, an employee at the firm said.
