Mututho alleges massive looting at NACADA

21 January 2014, 13:44

Nairobi - The National Campaign and Alcohol Drugs Abuse Authority Chairman, John Mututho, has alleged massive mismanagement of funds at the authority.

According to Mututho, the authority is missing about KES 400 million which was collected by the authority from alcohol outlets nationwide.

“There are 30,000 alcohol outlets within Nairobi alone which pay a minimum of KES 12500 in licenses per month which translates to KES 357 million,” he alleged .

He claims that only KES 12 million was on the record books of the authority.

Mututho said the NACADA board were frustrating him and tried to conceal the mismanagement of funds in the anti-drugs authority.

He further alleged that the number of licenses that the authority said were issued did not correspond with the amount of money in the authority’s coffers.

Issuance of licenses, he said, was one of the authority’s services that had been greatly marred by irregularities with cases of fake licenses being issued to alcohol outlets across the country.

An audit has been ordered at the authority’s branches countrywide but Mututho said the process would be compromised as it was not carried out by an independent body in order to establish the exact amount of money that had allegedly embezzled.

Mututho, who is famous for bringing to Parliament what has been called the “Mututho Laws” has been at the helm of NACADA for two months.
