Musyoka leads calls for troops in Somalia

07 July 2014, 23:28

Nairobi - Former Vice President, Kalonzo Musyoka, has urged the government to recall its troops from war-torn Somalia to boost the local fight against insecurity.

Musyoka argued the current surge of insecurity was as a result of the Kenya Defence Forces' incursion in Somalia, an act which he says he had warned the government against during his tenure as the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

He claimed he had warned then-President Mwai Kibaki against sending troops to the neighbouring country.

“You are never going to win a war against these extremists,” said a pessimistic Musyoka.

Fellow legislators, Farah Maalim and Omar Hassan, stressed the need to recall the troops from Somalia so  more funds could be spent on internal security.

Maalim said that over 40 Billion shillings are used every year on KDF.

Musyoka called on clarity as to the number of casualties in the force.

"We need to start asking ourselves when we are bringing our troops back from Somalia. We need to know how many KDF soldiers have been killed in that country,” said Musyoka.

The Kenya Defense Forces were sent to Somalia in 2011 under the Operation Linda Nchi following several terror attacks in Nairobi and other towns in Kenya.

The KDF have since liberated several towns in Somalia but has suffered casualties.

The force was now working under the AMISON banner which is playing a key role together with Ugandan troops to extinguish the Al Shabaab threat.

Reprisal attacks in Kenya have been due to Al Shabaab’s demands for the recalling of KDF troops from Somalia.
