Muslim leader: I could be killed next

01 November 2013, 20:41

Mombasa - Family members and a Muslim community leader say that police in the city of Mombasa have not carried out any investigative work after an unexplained shooting in early October killed a prominent mosque leader and three others.

The killing of Sheik Ibrahim Ismael followed the unexplained killing of yet another mosque leader, Aboud Rogo Mohammed, in August 2012. Both were leaders at Mombasa's Masjid Musa Mosque. Abubakar Shariff Ahmed, also a leader of the mosque community, says he knows he could be killed next.

Ahmed and family members accuse the government of being behind the killings. The coastal police chief did not respond to repeated calls for comment. A national police spokesman told The Associated Press to call back later but then turned off his phone.
