Mombasa at a standstill as Ferries stall

Nairobi - Mombasa is at a standstill after ferries at the Likoni Ferry stalled and the public was reduced to sharing only one.
The ferries stalled Monday morning and with only one operating, there was a huge backlog at the usually busy and very important crossing into the island.
As a result, there was a stampede as members of the public sought to get onto the one available one causing injuries to 11 people.
Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa was angered by the Kenya Ferry Services over the matter.
" This is madness and cannot be allowed to happen. The economy of Mombasa depends on the ferries and so for all of them to be spoilt at the same time is unnaceptable," a visibly angry Marwa told members of the press.
The situation worsened after the MV Kwale got stuck on a ramp on the Mombasa Island side. The ferry had been the only vessel ferrying vehicles across the channel for the past one week.
Currently, only two ferries, the MV Nyayo and the MV Likoni are in operation.
Marwa called for the sacking of Kenya Ferry Services CEO Musa Hassan Musa.
" His only job is to ensure that the ferries work and he has failed on several occasions and should be sacked," he stated.
