Committee on the Power of Mercy sworn in

31 October 2011, 14:11

Nairobi - The Daily Nation reports that members of the Advisory Committee on the Power of Mercy were sworn in on Monday at the Supreme Court by Senior Deputy Registrar Paul Rotich, in accordance with the provisions set out in Article 133 in the Constitution.

The committee members include Attorney General Githu Muigai who will chair the committee, Florence Kajuju Gitonga, Regina Saira Boisabi and Ann Wanjiku Waihura and they will advise the President on petitions of mercy and pardon after taking views of the victims of the offence in respect to their sentences.

The President will now be able to exercise a power of mercy and grant a free or conditional pardon to a person convicted of an offence, postponing the carrying out of a punishment or substituting a less severe form of punishment.

The Committee shall work with State organs responsible for correctional services to educate people on the power of mercy and procedures relating to applications for its exercise.
