Nairobi – The Mau resettlement program kicked off on Wednesday with the Ministry of Lands calling for tenders from individuals willing to sell their land to be used to resettle the evictees.
Capital Fm News reports that James Orengo, the Lands Minister said that the tenders submitted would be evaluated by a technical committee at a later date.
Orengo said that right now the funds that they have are only in relation to Embobut, Mau and Mt Elgon, and that the ministry was making further requests for other areas where they think the cases deserve. “A billion shillings is not a lot of money but to my understanding there could be additional funds once we have spent what we have,” Orengo added.
The tender announcement came as Prime Minister Raila Odinga appointed Gideon Moi, former President Moi’s son to head an adhoc committee on the resettlement.
