Mangiti reveals plans to regulate arts industry

25 July 2014, 16:24

Nairobi - The government is developing policies and relevant set of laws that will regulate the art sector in the country, the Planning Principal Secretary, Peter Mangiti said.

He said the policies and legislation are aimed at rendering a profitable and sustainable sector of the economy.

“The art sector generates a lot of money but there is no legislation to tighten up the sector. As a Principal Secretary in charge of young people I have an interest in these issues as creative industry is largely dominated by the young people,” said Mangiti.

Mangiti said that the Ministry and stakeholders had resolved to pursue the consultative discussions aimed at ensuring compliance and implementation towards respect of art and ownership hence artists would make a living from their skills.

The cabinet official lauded the government for its commitment to initiating a national anti-piracy campaign and urged all relevant agencies to collaborate to enable the government achieve its goal.
He noted this would strengthen and eliminate the vice.

“There is an urgent and aggressive need to fight piracy for this sector to thrive and urge all agencies to pull together for the sake of our artists and country’s economy,” he said.

The initiative will ensure respect of art and authorship hence artists will earn from their skills in effort of building a winning nation, said Mangiti.
