Malindi businessman calm on Mpeketoni murder charges

10 July 2014, 11:31 William Korir

Nairobi - Mahadi Swaleh, a Malindi businessman charged with the Mpeketoni killings that cost the lives of 60 people is calm about the accusations.

The businessman was Wednesday charged with 60 murder counts over Mpeketoni Incident.

He is accused of aiding, housing and funding criminals to carry out the killings and cause panic and displacement in the area.

When quizzed about the charges leveled against him, he was calm and confident that he has nothing to hide over the matter.

" I am confident I will be cleared of the charges. I have a good team that will clear my name. That is all I can say, he said.

The government has insisted that the murders in the area have been caused by political tensions as compared to the Al Shabaab terror group which has thus far claimed the attacks.

Swaleh joins Lamu Governor Issa Timamy as the two high profile arrests in the case thus far.

Timamy has been released on bail and insisted that his is a witch-hunt by the government.

In other developments, over 100 people have been arrested by police in connection with the recent attacks in Hindi and Gambo areas which saw 22 people killed.
