Machakos - Machakos County governor Alfred Mutua launched a comprehensive water, roads and agriculture programme at Masinga sub-county.
The project is said to be one of the most ambitious projects undertaken by county governments since the advent of devolution.
The comprehensive project includes more than 800 boreholes, 820 dams, pans and water tanks intended to aid residents of the dry county.
“To ensure water security, we are drilling over 800 boreholes, 820 dams & pans, water raised tanks for treated water for all 896 villages,” said Mutua.
He added that the county had already mapped out every village using modern technology and also plans to de-silt all the existing dams.
He promised clean water tanks in every village by the end of the year.
The Machakos County has begun tarmacking all major roads starting with the Makutano-ma-Mwala to Kithimani road.
The governor said the Mavoko roads would be upgraded next to ensure movement within the county was convenient.
The county has also availed free tractors, subsidized fertilizer, free chicks and free seeds to farmers in Machakos.
“We are giving greenhouses to 20 women groups in each of the county's 40 wards to enhance food security for the county and country in general,” said Mutua.
He added that the county had purchased 36 heavy machines that included borehole rigs, bulldozers, excavators and graders that would fast track the implementation of the ambitious projects.
