Machakos issues illegal brew warning

22 April 2014, 21:57

Nairobi – Machakos Police issued a warning to brewers of illegal beer amid reports such illicit brews were destroying families and increasing crime in the area.

The warning follows the destruction of thousands of litres of illegal brew in Athi River in the county.

Police are on high alert to ensure that illegal beer brewing is brought to an end. This menace is fuelling the crime among local youth and increasing poverty,” Deputy Officer Commanding Athi River, Lazarus Tarus, told media after police destroyed the illegal brew.

He warned members of the public against consuming such beer as it was enhancing the growth of the backyard breweries.

There have recently been two deaths in the area recently, attributed to illicit beer.

The problem is widespread across the country.

It has spiraled despite warnings such beer posed to health.

Brewers are said to lace the illegal products with dangerous chemicals to make it more potent.
