Lenku faces impeachment over Mpeketoni deaths

Nairobi - Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff said a motion to impeach the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Co-ordination, Joseph Ole Lenku could be ready for debate in Parliament if approved by the Speaker.
He was hopeful the Speaker of the National Assembly would approve the motion.
“Next week, hopefully pending approval from the speaker’s office there shall be a motion to impeach Ole Lenku tabled by myself,” said Shariff.
If approved, the motion will be coming just a week after more than 50 people were killed in Mpeketoni and many others injured after an overnight attack which police allegedly failed to respond to on time.
The lack of immediate response from security apparatus has been criticized as a failure by the police and the Cabinet secretary by extension.
Lenku’s probable motion of impeachment if approved will follow a similar motion against a Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and Planning which was last week thrown out on a matter of technicality.
The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) also called on a cessation of inflammatory statements from both political sides saying that it could cause unnecessary tension in the country.
“I recently have said and stand to my words that my belief is that we should hold all political rallies and cease all inflammatory statements from both political sides as this causes unnecessary tension which isn't healthy for our country and the same can cause escalated irrevocable bloodshed,” said Shariff.
