Lawyer wants top judge sacked

04 October 2013, 16:54

Nairobi - Edward Sifuna, a prominent lawyer based in Nairobi, wants the Judicial Services Commission to dismiss Justice Joel Ngugi for alleged graft charges and his involvement in a conspiracy scheme to oust the embattled Judiciary’s Chief Registrar Gladys Shollei.

Sifuna's appeal comes just days after a series of mails exchanged between the Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and a group of five other people working in the judiciary leaked to the public displaying a well-orchestrated scheme intended to oust Shollei.

“The manner in which the Judge conducted himself in this matter gives me all the suspicion that he has sacrificed his independence and integrity at the altar of greed, pursuit of power and influence," stated part of the petition filed by Sifuna.

According to Sifuna, the ongoing power struggles display the rifts that exist in the judiciary between the two power sides that compete for supremacy.

Shollei will be facing the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on October 16 to respond to the claims of impropriety facing her.

The decision was reached at after a two-day meeting by the JSC in which Shollei’s issue was discussed at length.
