Nairobi - Lamu Governor Issa Timamy has been arrested and will be charged in court over his alleged role in killings in the area that have seen over 70 people perish.
He will appear in court in Mombasa Thursday to be charged together with others who have been in police custody over the killings.
The move is the latest step in the debate over the killings and their origin, with the government insisting there is a political motive.
This is despite terror group Al Shabaab claiming the attacks.
A tweet from the Interior ministry confirmed the arrest, as did senior officials who spoke to News24.
" Lamu Governor Issa Timamy arrested over recent violence and deaths in the Mpeketoni area and to appear in court tomorrow, Thursday, it said.
According to sources, the Governor is calm and confident about the matter with his sights now set on clearing his name.
" He is as surprised as we are over the accusation. He will defend himself accordingly, an aide close to the Governor said.
Timamy is the first senior name mentioned in the attack probe, as the government presses forward with attempts to prove that their insistence of political agendas for the Lamu attacks is vilified.
