'Kirinyanga will resist maternity fees'

Kirinyaga - Kirinyaga Central Member of Parliament, Gachoki Gitari, slammed plans by the county to re-introduce maternity fees in hospitals.
He said residents will resist such moves.
It is alleged that the county assembly members wanted to re-introduce the maternity ion a bid to raise revenue.
“The county assembly members have planned to discuss and pass this Bill. If they do so, residents and local leaders will revolt against them. The maternity fee was abolished by the national government earlier in the year and should never be re-introduced at the county level hospitals,” Gitari said.
Gitari noted that mothers had been under intense suffering due to the maternity fees and thus moves by the county assembly members to re-introduce the fees would be unacceptable.
President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration abolished the maternity fees earlier in the year in a bid to reduce delivery deaths and discourage the use of traditional midwives by expectant mothers.
Under prevailing government directives, maternity services are free at public hospitals, health centres and clinics in the country.
This is with effect from June 1.
This is in line with funding established in the 2013-2014 budget, which gives all Kenyans better access to primary healthcare services at government-run institutions and dispensaries.
