Nairobi - Kenya Police traffic commandant Samuel Kimaru has warned errant drivers of stiff penalties if they flout traffic rules in the coming festive season.
The festive season usually comes with an increase of road and traffic activity and with it road carnage.
Just Sunday, five people were killed and many others injured in a road accident along Mombasa road and speaking on the incident as well as many others, Kimaru says that the police will step up road safety campaigns.
" We will do our part as police and increase road blocks as well as try ensure that there is increased vigilance by doing as many campaigns as we can, he said.
He however insists that it is up to individual drivers to take care of their passengers and passengers to report cases of reckless driving.
So far in 2013, over 3000 people have perished on Kenyan roads and the number will likely rise with the end year festivities on the way.
