Nairobi - Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has reduced parking fees for matatu's in the city, a move that will please the transport providers.
The fees will however only be reduced for those matatus that are in registered saccos, he announced Thursday.
The move will please transport providers who have always complained of the high cost of doing business in the city.
14 seater matatus will pay a monthly parking fee of KES 3,650, down from KES 5,000.
29-41 sitter matatus will pay a monthly parking fee of KES 5,500, down from KES 8,000, while matatus carrying over 41 passengers will pay KES 7,250,
down from KES 10,000.
Kidero said that the move will only comply to those under saccos and insisted that it was taken for the benefit of matatu operators.
" The new rates will be effective next month, he said at City Hall.
He also added that the County government is working on ways of ensuring all matatus in the county pay their rates.
" There are over 30,000 matatus in Nairobi and only over 10,000 pay rates. That has to really change and it is something we are working on, he added.
He did say though that parking for personal vehicles would remain at KES 300 as has been.
