Kibaki: Kenya has a bright future

02 December 2013, 15:38 Eugene Odanga

Nairobi - Former president Mwai Kibaki has expressed confidence in Kenya's future, saying that the foundation has been laid for a bigger and better Kenya.

Kibaki also said that he hopes the signing of the East African Community treaty will enhance further growth of the nation and region as a whole.

Speaking at a Public Lecture at the University of Nairobi Monday, Kibaki declined to answer questions on the current political climate in the country, instead choosing to focus on Kenya's Jubilee year celebrations.

He spoke of the challenges faced by the country in the past and emphasised need to ensure there is growth in sectors that are vital to the economy.

" The earlier generation of Kenyans after indipendence has lived the best years of their lives over the past five decades; the future, most certainly now belongs to their children, he said.

He also insisted that the only way the country will grow is if the people live in harmony.

" We need harmony to progress as a country. It is important that we do so, he added.

The lecture, which will henceforth be held annually was part of the Kenya @50 celebrations and was organized in conjunction with the University of Nairobi and the Kenya@50 secretariat.
