Nairobi - Mvita Member of Parliament,
Abdulswamad Shariff, has urged residents of his constituency to
register orphans to enable them benefit from the government-sponsored
monthly payment programme.
Sharrif said that the committee that oversaw the programme had agreed
that the registration of orphans should be done annually and hence the
need for the orphans to be registered during this period.
“We have agreed with our local Mvita Constituency Social Welfare
Committee that registration shall be annual. This is to ensure
transparency,” said Shariff.
He added that the applicants should be vetted in order to ensure that the beneficiaries were deserving cases.
"All applicants shall be vetted physically. Awarding of the payment
shall be based on priority and the most vulnerable shall be the ones to
benefit first by merit,” he said.
The monthly payment programme targeting orphans is part of the Older
Persons Cash Transfer (OPCT) first began in 2007 under the Rapid
Response Initiative (RRI).
Government funds the programme to provide a bi-monthly stipend to elderly, disabled as well as orphaned persons.
It caters for Kenya's most poor and vulnerable communities with the
Postal Corporation of Kenya is the designated payment agent.
