Kenyans opposed to abortions, same sex relationships

03 July 2014, 11:50

Nairobi - A significant proportion of Kenyans do not support abortion and homosexual practice.

This is according to a study conducted by IPSOS Kenya for the Kenya Christian Professionals Forum (KCPF).

The findings of the study, titled “Perceptions towards Abortion and Homosexuality in Kenya”, revealed that 87 percent of Kenyans do not support abortion on demand.

While a majority (75 percent) of those who support abortion on demand indicate that their support is pegged on protecting the mother’s life if the unborn endangers it, a noteworthy 43 percent declare support for abortion on demand if the woman/couple may not be ready for a child due to career progression interests.

Other reasons given are if the conception is as a result of rape (3 percent), and generally if the pregnancy was unwanted (2 percent).

“There is a need for Kenyan employers to take serious note of this. There is a growing need for flexibility of working conditions for women so as to allow them to also have a choice to have a family and at the same time have a career. What is happening is that women are boxed into making a choice between career and family,” Margaret Ireri, Managing Director of Ipsos.
