Nairobi - The number of tourists visiting Kenya in the first nine months of this year rose 16 percent to 1.04 million compared with the same period a year ago, Tourism Minister Najib Balala said on Friday.
Kenya's tourism sector earned East Africa's biggest economy 74 billion shillings in 2010, making it one of the country's top sources of foreign exchange.
"Its a record year ... Tourism in Kenya has demonstrated a remarkable growth to hit 1.04 million. That's 16 percent compared with the same time last year," Balala told a news conference.
Balala said Britain had the highest number of tourists visiting Kenya, followed by the United States. The minister said he expects tourist numbers to reach 1.3 million by end-December.
Balala said Kenya had targeted 1.8 million tourists this year. In 2010, a record 1.1 million tourists visited the country, which is famed for its game parks and white Indian Ocean beaches, beating the previous high hit in 2007.
