Kenyan athlete competes alone to evade arrest in U.S.

21 November 2014, 10:30

Nairobi - A Kenyan marathoner ran eight kilometers to avoid being arrested by police in the United States.

The 31-year-old Eric Kipkemei Chirchir took to his heels when he was confronted by police who received a report that he had inappropriately touched a 15-year-old girl in New Jersey, newjersey.com reported.

Detectives said Chirchir left his bicycle and bag and ran the eight kilometres to his house where they found him hiding in the closet of his daughter's bedroom.

He has been charged with criminal sexual contact, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest and eluding police and is being held at the Bergen County jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Police admitted that they could not catch up with fast running Chirchir because he is one of the world's elite marathon runners.
