Kenya could lose billions to cyber crime

25 March 2014, 10:15

Nairobi - Kenya's business is set to lose close to KES 141.68 billion if the government fails to act on increased cyber threats, an expert has confirmed.

Kenya Copyright Board Director, Marisella Ouma, said the most worrying trends amid these crimes were fears of business loss, loss of business confidential data, attacks on critical communication infrastructure as well as unwanted access on both private and government information by intruders.

Ouma was reacting to a new study by the International Data Centre, which revealed that the local business might lose huge amounts of money amounting to KES 141.68 billion this year alone unless concerted measures were put in place to counter such increasing threats of cyber crime in Kenya.

Among others, the new study revealed that most company employees were taking precautions by secretly installing their own pirated software on company computers without the knowledge of the employers for fear of the looming cyber crimes.

Kenya is one of the countries worst hit by cyber crime.

It is said to be the second most affected in the continent.
