Kenya by far East Africa's largest alcohol consumer

Nairobi - NACADA chairman John Mututho says Kenyans consume three times as much alcohol as Uganda and Tanzania do.
Mututho says that Kenya accounts for over 75% of all alcohol consumed in the region, according to records from producers.
He also says that 12 million Kenyans drink on a daily basis and 3 million more drink too, putting the figure of active Kenyan drinkers at 15 million.
He further stated that of the 15 million, 2 million need rehabilitation.
Mututho was speaking to the National Assembly Committee on Administration and National Security in parliament while stating the figures.
He added that it was prudent that there be a formula to speak to Kenyans about drinking, which NACADA is formulating.
" As you can see the numbers here, there are many people who consume alcohol.
" Regrettably, there are many others that suffer from effects of alcohol drinking and NACADA is yet to reach out to help them, he added.
He was also questioned on what NACADA was doing to prevent future cases of illegal brew entering the market as was seen in the death of over 100 people in June from illicit brew.
" We have taken adequate steps to ensure that we have licensed alcohol sold. We have tightened the screws as much as we can, he said.
