Kenya, Nigeria to partner against terrorism

20 May 2013, 10:51 Augustine Osayande

Nairobi - Nigeria and Kenya have agreed to collaborate in the war against increasing terrorism in their two countries.

The agreement follows President Uhuru Kenyatta requesting for Nigeria’s intervention on Somalia, a hotbed for terrorists.

Reuben Abati, special adviser on media to Nigerian President Jonathan Goodluck disclosed the agreement on Monday

Abati told Deputy President William Ruto that Nigeria was concerned about the activities of terrorists in Somalia and other places in Africa, saying such actions have negative effects on peace and development in the continent.

"I have just declared a state of emergency in three states in our country, to check the havoc of terrorists.

"So I can appreciate the issues confronting Somalia and Kenya," Jonathan said.

Jonathan said Africa needed to find a collective solution to the problems afflicting Somalia.

He suggested a meeting of leaders on the sidelines of the African Union's 50th Anniversary Summit, scheduled for next week, to carefully look into the Somalia and Nigerian challenges caused by terrorists.
