KDF confirms death of soldier in Mombasa

03 December 2014, 09:26

Mombasa - Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) on Tuesday confirmed the death of a military officer who was shot dead by unknown gunmen near the coastal city of Mombasa on Monday night.

KDF spokesman Colonel David Obonyo said the KDF soldier was shot by a stray bullet along Links road just outside Nyali Barracks during an attempted robbery.

"He was shot dead outside the barracks at a bus stop where he was waiting for a matatu to go home. We are informed there was a running battle and shoot-out between police and suspected thugs," Obonyo said.

He said the military officer was heading home during the incident. Police in Mombasa have said no suspect has been arrested so far.

Obonyo said the victim was found lying at the scene by other KDF personnel who ventured out of the barracks after hearing the gunshots.

Mombasa has experienced increased grenade attacks recently that prompted the security forces to stage rains on several mosques where they recovered grenades and several crude weapons.

The East African nation has raised fears that such increased attacks will scare away tourists especially this festive season.
