Industrial Court halts new NSSF rates

Nakuru - The Industrial Court has halted the implementation of the new National Social Security Fund (NSSF) until a suit filed by the Kenya Plantation and Workers Union (KPWU) is heard and determined.
Justice Byrum Ongaya directed Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi to convene a meeting with KPWU and NSSF over the controversial rates that were set to take effect starting July 1.
According to KPWU, the new rates should be struck out because they contravene the Constitution, The Standard reports.
In May, officials from the Public Servants Trade Union (PUSETU) threatened to call for a nationwide workers’ strike if the government failed to suspend the enactment of the new rates.
They argued that the tax burden had been put on Kenyan workers without an increase in their salaries and the enactment of the new rates would overburden them more.
