Govt, teachers heading for another showdown

Nairobi - Tension is simmering between teachers and the government over the registration and hiring of early childhood development (ECD) teachers across the country.
The Secretary General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Wilson Sossion, has called on the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) to conduct registration of teachers.
“If TSC advertises today for the commencement of the registration process today, it will go on but the TSC is sitting pretty and we do not know what is going on at TSC,” said Sossion.
He added that the TSC knew and accepted that it was their mandate to register ECD teachers and that they have given budgetary requisition to treasury in order for them to conduct the exercise.
“We have confirmed that TSC has given budgetary request to the treasury which we think it has good intentions,” said Sossion.
Sossion said that the union would not allow for illegal practice of teaching and breach of sectoral laws.
“Anybody offering teaching service whether in private schools or public schools as deployed by TSC, must be registered and must meet the threshold of law,” said Sossion.
He said that if the government fails to act the matter will be taken to the KNJT executive council who will deliberate on mass action over the matter.
