Nairobi - Awendo MP, Jared Opiyo has called on the government to deal with wastage of resources, corruption and duplication of duties in order to enhance budgetary allocation to development.
Opiyo, who is also a Member of the Parliamentary Budget Committee said that wastage and corruption in government contributed to a large share of the recurrent expenditure.
The legislator said he supported his committee’s quest to reduce this year’s budgetary allocation.
“We need to reduce on public spending both in the national level and in the counties,” said Opiyo.
Opiyo decried the state of duplication of duties in the county governments saying that there is no need to have a deputy county commissioner and a sub county administrator within the same jurisdiction carrying out the same roles.
“Why do we have a deputy county commissioner when we have a sub-county administrator?” he quipped.
He said that these employees were sitting in their offices doing nothing yet still draw salaries at the end of the month.
Opiyo also said the government had to deal with ghost workers in order to reduce wastage incurred by government in payment of salaries to people who were not in the workforce.
He called for an audit to be carried out in order to account for those people who were in the ministries that have now been merged.
“We have not heard the government asking for money to lay off workers who were in the ministries that are now defunct,” said Opiyo.
