Govt outlines employment creation plans

21 February 2014, 10:04

Nairobi - The government is working on an unemployment reduction plan that will include talks with foreign governments to employ as many Kenyans as possible, officials said.

The Ministry of Labour, which is at the forefront in the execution of the plan to fight unemployment that stands at 40 percent in the country, has also developed a National Employment Policy & Strategy which is pending in Parliament.

Principal Secretary for Labor, Al Noor Ismail, said that in the policy, the ministry had proposed that the expenditure of government be scrutinized as to the extent in which it would generate employment to the youth.

“We also want to see what to see how we can link ourselves better with employers and work with organizations and people particularly in the manufacturing sector in order to ensure that companies that create more jobs for the youth are given incentives,” said Ismail.

The unemployment rate has been found to be increasing over the years.

It is estimated that the unemployment rate among the youth aged 15-24, as estimated by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), is 24 percent compared to an overall open unemployment rate of 12.7 percent.
