Fire breaks out in Gikomba market

23 June 2015, 09:08 Pauline Nyumu

Nairobi - A huge fire erupted at Gikomba market Tuesday morning, razing property of unknown value.

According to Kenya Red Cross, the fire started at around 4.45 am.

In a Twitter update, Kenya Red Cross said: “#FireAlert: @0445hrs fire reported in Gikomba Market, NCC fire and NDOC activated fire engines enroute to the scene.”

Eyewitnesses said that the fire gutted rental houses and clothing at stalls facing Landhies Road.

Effort to put off the fire were frustrated by the inaccessibility of the place by fire engines, though various rescue teams were dispatched to help with rescue operations.

The fire disrupted traffic flow on Jogoo Road, Landhies Road and Haile Selassie road as fire fighters battled to reach the scene, the Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre reported via Twitter.

No major casualties were reported.
