Nairobi - Ten individuals will later on Tuesday be honoured for improving the livelihoods of rural communities in dry land ecosystems in Sub-Saharan Africa through sustainable land management.
The Equator Prize for Sustainable Land Management (SLM) in Sub-Saharan Africa recognizes and celebrates local grassroots organizations.
The Equator Prize for SLM Award Ceremony will be held at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi from 5.30pm to 7.30pm local time.
Ten winners will receive US$5 000 and will attend the awards ceremony.
Prof. Judi Wakhungu, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Water and Natural Resources, will preside over the ceremony.
The event aims to be a contribution to the World Day to Combat Desertification, and to the work of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
In addition to the award ceremony in Nairobi, several winners of the SLM Prize will be selected to receive the Equator Prize 2014, and will be supported to participate in a series of events held in conjunction with the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled for September in New York.
