Coast land issue a test for Uhuru
16 August 2013, 08:36
Nairobi - Resolving the squatter problem at the Coast, is perceived to be one of the reasons the Jubilee Coalition performed poorly in the region during the March 4 General Election, and it will be an uphil task for President Uhuru Kenyatta.
According to The Standard, poverty and conflict in Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Taita Taveta, Tana River and Lamu counties are to blame for the squatter problem and the ruling government faces a delicate balancing act resettling thousands of squatters.
Kenyatta's government will also have to allay the fears of huge landowners whose leases have expired and their parcels invaded, not to mention the thorny issue of the president’s family (by his own admission during the presidential election debates) owning at least 30,000 acres of land in Taita Taveta County.
