Nairobi - Workers from different sectors in the country converged at Uhuru Park, Nairobi, to mark this year’s Labour Day celebrations.
The occasion was organized by the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) and led by Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu, who delivered a speech on behalf of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
However, security around the park was tight to prevent the disruption of the event by a rival union Public Service Union of Kenya (PUSETU), which had also planned to host the event.
Leaders from both the Jubilee and Cord coalitions who attended the event backed COTU saying it was the only union that has been known for protecting the rights of workers since time memorial.
"The Jubilee government does not have time to meddle in the affairs of workers. The workers should manage their own affairs," said Parliament's Majority Leader Aden Duale.
On his part Senate's Minority Leader Moses Wetang'ula said COTU should not be weakened and told Kambi
to stay out of the workers' affairs.
