25 September 2015, 11:30
Nairobi - The teachers strike has been suspended for 90 days by the Industrial Court , pending an arbitrary committee set to agree on the way forward on the teachers pay.
Judge Nelson Abuogha said Friday that for the sake of school children who are at home and national examinations which begin Monday, the strike be suspended in the meantime to allow things return to normal and life go on.
He also said that in the expiry of the 90 day period, both sides are open to go back to their constitutional right if the dispute is not resolved.
The 50/60% payrise effected by the Labour court has been contested by the government, saying it cannot afford to pay the amount as it will cause an economic crisis.
Teachers will also be paid all salaries and allowances for the period they will be on strike.
The judge also said that the strike was not illegal and that anyone who took part not be victimised.
Teachers are thus expected back in schools Monday.
