Nairobi - The Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK) has discouraged mineral water consumers to avoid all forms of bottled water within Kajiado County amid fears the water was counterfeited.
COFEK, trough a statement said bottled water, even from credible brands, was being counterfeited and sold to unsuspecting consumers within Kajiado County and specifically Ngong, Kitengela, Isinya, Magadi, Ilbissil and Namanga townships.
“As such we hereby issue a yellow alert to bottled water consumers within Kajiado County, specifically, and Kenya generally,” said COFEK.
The statement from the consumer body added that consumers could be victims of contaminated water.
It said for now, major supermarkets could be safer but they still ask consumers to exercise extreme caution and discretion while buying and or consuming bottled water.
COFEK stated that most of the counterfeited bottled water is not only untreated, but denies the consumer the opportunity to boil it because it is sold in packages of reputable companies which are known to offer safe quality products.
