Al-Shabaab militants attack KDF base in Somalia

Kismayu - A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) base in Kismayu was on Tuesday night attacked by Al-Shabaab militants.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Chala Hassan, who is heading the forces in Kismayu, the militants shot aimlessly at the base to provoke a response from the KDF, but no casualty was reported, Daily Nation reports.
The KDF bombed the area where the gunshots came from and they could not immediately tell whether the attackers were killed.
Last week Friday, Kenya announced it had killed at least 30 Al-Shabaab rebels including top commanders in an air strike on a training camp in Somalia.
The raid targeted a camp in Garbarahey in Gedo region, situated around 600km northwest of the Somali capital Mogadishu and near the border with Kenya and Ethiopia, the Kenyan military said.
Officials said they believed dozens of other militants were also wounded.
Kenya has been battling the al-Qaeda-inspired Al-Shabaab on Somali soil since October 2011, and has since joined the African Union force deployed in the country.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has vowed to maintain Kenya's military presence in the war-torn country despite Al-Shabaab attacks inside Kenya -- including the attack on the Westgate shopping mall in September last year.
