Al Shabaab claim Djibouti attack, raise alarm levels in Kenya

28 May 2014, 18:40

Nairobi - The Somalia-based Islamist radical group of Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the deadly weekend attack on Djibouti, part of the militants attempt at targeting countries that contribute troops to peacekeeping efforts in the horn of Africa nation.

Spokesman for Al-Shabaab Sheikh Ali Rageh told reporters that fighters of the group targeted a hotel in Djibouti city where foreigners frequent, killing three and injuring three others.

Three people were killed in Saturday's suicide attack which was carried out by male and female suicide bombers from Somalia, according Djibouti's ADI news agency.

The Al Qaeda-affiliated Somali Islamist group has previously carried out deadly attacks on Kenya and Uganda for their contribution to the UN-mandated African Union peace Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

Ethiopia and Sierra Lione also have troops with AMISOM while other countries back the AU Somalia mission both logistically and financially.

The AU troops backing Somali forces have recently made headway in the fight against Al-Shabaab after they have retaken large swathes of territory from the radical group's fighters.

Somali government officials have vowed to eradicate the Islamist insurgents from the country and called on the international community and regional states to further increase their support for national army.

The latest attack on Djibouti is likely to further strengthen regional cooperation between governments in the Horn of Africa in their fight to rid East Africa of the menace of terrorism.
