AU urged to back ICC

07 October 2013, 13:00

Nairobi - The Africa Union has been called upon by 34 lobby groups from across Africa to support the International Criminal Court as a crucial court of last resort.

The ICC African members have been urged to reaffirm their support for the ICC in the upcoming extraordinary summit in Addis Ababa scheduled for October 11 and 12, 2013, Daily Nation reports.

The move comes in the wake of the ongoing cases at The Hague of President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto and radio journalist Joshua arap Sang that have led to the court being accused of primarily and unfairly targeting Africa. This has also raised concern of some African countries, including Kenya considering withdrawing from the ICC court.
