74-year old male released from prison following a presidential pardon

Nairobi - 74-year-old James Weru was released from prison following a pardon from President Uhuru Kenyatta after serving a 42 year jail sentence for murder about three months ago.

According to Citizen TV Weru along with 65 other prisoners were given a pardon in December 2012.

Also read: Ex-convict welcomed back by his church after serving seven years in prison.

Since his release he has been staying at the Nairobi Probation and After Care Services which seeks to reintegrate ex-convicts back into society.

Weru has since returned to his home in Nyeri despite being rejected by his family.

Meanwhile the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) has urged Kenyans to change their altitude on ex-convicts released by the state under the Power of Mercy Act 2011.

Church Secretary General, Peter Kariuki stated that often ex-covnvicts upon their release are chased away but need to  be reintegrated in order to give hope of a normal life.
