Nairobi - Over 2300 people have perished in road accidents in the first nine months of the year, reports Standard Digital
This was chilling number released by the traffic department, it illustrates an average death toll of 260 a month.
A grisly accident between a bus and a truck on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway took place Saturday night, killing 13 people, and injuring 21. The highest death toll to have been killed on the roads in Kenya is 3760 and if things continue the way they are, this years death toll will surpass it.
The figures show that pedestrians provided the most casualties, 1083 have been killed so far. That figure is in strak contrast to the number of drivers which have been killed, which is 212.
Kenya's roads have seen an increase in the number of cars, and analysts point towards bad driving which has contributed to the high death toll so far. The figures give a chilling reminder to road users, especially over the festive season, when more people are on the road and traffic officials see an increase in drink-driving cases.
