A woman must know what her man earns

17 March 2015, 13:46 Shakila Alivitsa

Nairobi - How do you know people in Kenya have money?

I will answer that for you; because this man Angelo Petrucci, Chief Master Tailor for Brioni (hope I got that right) will leave this country with profits that are more than our Gross Domestic Product. I do not think it is even about separating the men from the boys any more as this is just a whole other level that we are in.

You will think that this man is coming in to cater for a small sect of people but trust me, if you drop in –that is if you will be allowed in-you will be surprised by the number of men that will be clamoring to get their measurements done. Men in Kenya do have money, I really did not get the impact of us becoming a middle income economy until these recent happenings. When a man who dresses presidents jets in to get measurements on clothing it is because there has been such a huge demand that he had to drop everything else.

If I found out that my husband was spending that kind of money on a suit and he is not running a country he better be having billions in his account and not about to bankrupt us so that he can fit in. Trust me, there will be those ones that go in just to get at least one suit done. Also I better be getting a bump in MY household allowance. Ladies, this is how you will finally be able to know if your man has hidden assets. I do not know when this measurements are being taken but if your man is having some mysterious lunch at Serena, there is a 90% chance that it is with that tailor.

If he wants that suit then let him get that suit, but first he had better have sort your household first because I do not think Angelo deals in returns; every suit is custom made. This is the time not to get angry or curse his dumb mind, this is the time to encourage his heart’s desires because you will reap the benefits tenfold especially if that man has more than two suits made.

It will be a bitter pill to swallow, I can envision my mother trying to do it. It is usually hard when my father wants to buy a car, so I can just picture the same face on numerous faces in the Kenyan household. A lot of Kenyan women believe in spending on themselves or the man spending on them, I rarely hear about the man getting the same treatment. There will be a lot of sour faces out and about in Nairobi.

For the men though, unless you are planning to bring in the suit in a different package and no tags, prepare to spend ten times the amount you spend on her. That is how we negotiate; you buy suits amounting to more than three million shillings, you may have to spend around ten on her. An extra vacation, a shopping or shopping trips to foreign lands and a car will be thrown in-that is just how our mind works. So in other words if your budget with your meeting with the master tailor is around let’s say five million shillings, we know you have it, then you should readjust it to fifteen million shillings. Does not matter if you never shop or get anything for yourself because to us you look the same no matter what suit you wear as long as it’s fitting.  7000 stitches to us is just potato (UK), potato (US).
