Nairobi - A women’s lobby group dubbed Warembo na Uhuru has been launched in Nyeri to campaign for re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto during 2017 polls.
The group’s national mobilizer, Ann Muthoni said they will recruit more than two million women into the group from all corners of the country.
However, Muthoni said they will largely concentrate on campaigning for Uhuru’s re-election and mobilizing members of the public to register as voters.
“Women are active in building the economy. We want to sensitize local residents about government’s activities in empowering women and youths and the development projects initiated,” she explained.
She noted that civic education programs will start soon to inform the minority groups of funds allocated to them by the State.
The group’s Secretary General, Sarah Ngima added that the lobby group will work towards urging women to participate in elective politics and also participate in voting.
“Women should register for votes and make informed decisions during voting. We will empower them with information and increase awareness about Youth Fund, Women Enterprise Fund among others,” Ngima noted.
The more than 100 women while dressed in red clothes and yellow ribbons had a two-hour procession in Nyeri town singing pro-Uhuru songs.
