Vihiga - A 53-year-old woman succumbed to injuries after falling into a pit latrine at Wasambu village, Kidundu sub location, Vihiga County.
Janet Muhonja had gone to the latrine to relieve herself in the morning when it sunk but there was nobody to help her, so she died.
“We had just taken tea in the morning together when I left her in her house. A few moments later, I heard the sound of a collapsing building. I rushed back to her house only to find that the latrine had sunk with her,” said Beatrice Mulusa, a close neighbour said.

Mulusa said she found her already submerged into the latrine with breathing difficulties, and her hand in the air.
“I started wailing and calling for help, only that there were very few people around who could help immediately,” she said.
Vihiga Police OCS, Judith Nyongesa noted that police arrived at the scene on time but could not salvage the woman as the latrine was deep and there was no fire engine at hand to help.
“The fire engine arrived from Kakamega when she had already died,” Nyongesa said.
