Woman sentenced for concealing birth

Nakuru - A mother of three, accused of secretly burying her new born child, has been sentenced to one year non-custodial sentence.
Magdalene Njeri, 33, admitted to have concealed a birth after she miscarried her 8 months fetus and buried it in her compound without informing her neighbours.

Nyahururu Resident Magistrate Willy Cheruiyot, heard that on January 14, this year, the resident of Subukia Trading centre in Nakuru County having realized she was in labour, opted to stay at home as she had no money to attend hospital.
Njeri, while appearing before the court in January pleaded leniency saying she had actually reported the matter to Kirengero police station two days later but the police arrested her and charged her with the offense.
Area Probation Officer Jacinta Maina told the court that the accused person, who was a single mother of three other children, pleaded for the courts leniency and appeared remorseful.
“The accused has promised to seek proper medical care in future and has heed to the advice to go for family planning that will ensure she does not get unwanted pregnancies,” noted Mrs. Maina.
She added that the accused was a casual laborer and sole bread winner to her children, she sired with her estranged husband.
