Why you always get stuck in situationships and not relationships

20 July 2016, 19:17 Shakila Alivitsa

You want to escape the other person’s emotional baggage

Most relationships start with, ‘let’s see where this goes.’ You are going in but you do not want to be fully committed and then when you are tired or when something better comes along, you are free to go that direction because you did not promise anyone anything. It is basically the fear of committing and then having this person fall harder for you and now you cannot break up with them.

So you would rather avoid all that by being in an ‘open-minded sort of situation. In the end, the other person always feels like they are wasting their time with you and move on. They move on to someone that will give them what they want rather than stay with you I a half-situationship.

You do not want any part of the work that is involved in being in a relationship

You want to be in a relationship, yes, that is why you are wondering why you are not in one. Thing is, you do not want all that work that comes with one. Couples, or some people demand for space because it actually can be quite a job being with some people. That is why it is easier to be friends with benefits or no strings attached or that really close friend so that when you get tired, you move on easily. No work; no anniversaries and birthdays to remember, or birthdays, you don’t have to join in with their family for events or take time out of your calendar so that you take them somewhere. Simply put, no obligations.

The idea that it might actually not work

No one likes the idea of having wasted their time. It contributes to the fear of commitment; like those people who get married and ten years down the line, they no longer work, are not compatible but the kids kept them together. You do not want to be in a relationship for a year or two and find out that they were not what you want. So you keep most of your interactions to ‘still getting to know one another’ or ‘easy come, easy go’.
