Why Uhuruto want Eugene Wamalwa in Nairobi

03 August 2016, 15:59 William Korir

Nairobi - Why do President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto want Eugene Wamalwa to vie for the Nairobi Governor's seat?

The Water CS has been named as one of the key faces likely to lead the Jubilee charge in Nairobi as they seek to oust Governor Evans Kidero come the 2017 polls.

But with a good number of potential candidates waiting to take over the role, why Wamalwa?

According to Jubilee insiders aware of the move, the key reason is that the top two leaders feel that Kidero has a huge advantage in the massive Luhya voting block in the city and that Wamalwa can genuinely split the vote.

" Kidero, if he goes under the CORD banner will have the Luo, Luhya and Kamba vote to himself and we know that they have huge numbers, if not the most in the city," News24 was told.

Wamalwa though, would ensure that Luhyas in the city likely vote for one perceived to be their own, which would throw a spanner in the works for Kidero.

" In the 2013 election, Kidero won by a margin of around 50,000 votes and those were mainly thanks to the Luhya and Luo. If the numbers of Luhya can be reduced significantly, then Jubilee will have an easy ride home," another insider stated.

The move to project Wamalwa to the forefront has led to upheaval within Jubilee, with MPs and other leaders questioning the move.
