Why Okoa Kenya collapsed

28 March 2016, 11:08 William Korir

Nairobi - CORD leaders were to blame for the death of the Okoa Kenya initiative, it has emerged.

The initiative died last week after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commision IEBC stated that only 850,000 of the required 1 million signatures collected were legitimate to allow a popular referendum.

It blamed the signature collecters for the mishap saying that of 1.4 million signatures presented, over 500,000 were useless.

Drawings of Rhino's and Elephants were used as signatures in some cases.

The process was in effect a bungled excercise.

" Truth be told. Okoa Kenya initiative experts were a disaster par excellence. Everything they touched turned black," Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo junior stated of the excercise.

It has emerged that some of the leaders who took part in the excercise spoilt it due to party wars within CORD.

For some, it was a means to exaulkt the name of CORD leader Raila Odings and an unfair means to lift him up to power ahead of the 2017 General Elections.

" This excercise was a means to help Raila lift his star ahead of the 2017 polls," a Wiper party official who backs co principal Kalonzo Musyoka for the Presidency told News24.

Furthermore, pressure from the national secretariat to ensure that the signatures were collected added to the wrongdoing as those left to collect them used fake ones to be able to get it over and done with as quickly as possible.

" Some of the signatures were collected in haste to satisy party leaders and their wants," another source told News24.

The Coalition is now looking for ways of salvaging the referendum in a limited space of time to avoid it collapsing alltogether.
